I have written this Stocking Cap pattern worked from the Top Down (which I prefer) and from the Bottom Up .

Materials: approximately 1 to 1½ ounces of weight category 4 yarn, size US/UK7, 4.5mm needles or size needed to obtain gauge.

Gauge: 16sts/20rows=4″ [4sts/5rows=1”] .

Stitches:525662

Instructions Starting with Crown Increases:
Cast On & Join 5 (5, 6)sts.
Row 1: Knit into the front & back of each st. 10 (10, 12)sts.
Work 1 round after each increase round.
Row 2:Knit into the front & back of each st. 20 (20, 24)sts.
Row 3: Knit into the front & back of each st. 40 (40, 48)sts.
Row 4: Knit 4sts, M1, 10 (10, 12) times 50 (50, 60)sts. Row 5: Knit 25 (8, 30), M1, repeat once, (6 times, K2, once) 52 (56, 62)sts.

Body: Work straight in stitch of choice for 2¾” (4” from start).

Brim/Cuff in Rib: Work for 2” (2½”, 3”).
Bind/Cast Off Loosely, weave in ends.

Alternative Stocking Cap instructions worked from the bottom up using US/UK7, 4.5mm needles.

Instructions starting with the Brim/Cuff:
Cast On 52 (56, 62)sts, join to work in the round and work in Rib for 2” (2½”, 3”).

Body: Work straight in stitch of choice for 2¾”.

Crown Decreases: 2sts=50 (6sts=50, 2sts=60)sts.
Work 1 round after each decrease round.
Decrease: K3 (3, 4)sts, K2tog, 40 (40, 48)sts.
Decrease: K2tog, to end 20 (20, 24)sts.
Decrease: K2tog, to end 10 (10, 12)sts.
Decrease: K2tog, to end 5 (5, 6)sts.
Bind/Cast Off Loosely, weave in ends.
