General Origins of the Butler Family Name

The Irish name Butler is of Norman origin being derived from the le Buitleir family who arrived into Ireland in the twelfth century. They established themselves initially in the Counties of Kilkenny and Tipperary where they held the largest estates and became the most influential family.  They have since become widespread throughout the country, except in the Province of Ulster.

Some of the first settlers of this name or some of its variants were: Christopher Butler who settled in Virginia in 1670. Charles, Daniel, Edward, Elizabeth, George, Giles, James, John, Joseph, Martin, Michael, Patrick, Richard, Thomas and William, all arrived in Philadelphia between 1840 and 1860, and many more.
