Boy’s Helmet

Boy’s Helmet Preemie to 12 months ©Linda Butler 2013

The Body of this hat is worked in Stockinette Stitch, the Brim and Earflaps are worked in seed(moss) stitch. Picture shows helmet with cuff in Sugar’n Cream Denim (100% cotton), Stonewash.
In General knitted hats should be made about 1”- 1½” smaller around than the head circumference, as the hats should stretch and sizes are not an exact science!

Materials: any category 4 worsted  weight yarn, size US7/UK7/4.5mm & US8/UK6/4mm, circular or double pointed needles, large eye blunt needle, stitch markers.

Gauge: 4sts/5rows =1” in Stockinette Stitch.

Brim: Using a Waste Yarn Method, Cast on 45 (49, 53, 57, 65)sts.  Join to work in the round by slipping the last stitch over the first stitch. 
Work 10 rounds/1½” in seed(moss) stitch .

Body: Change to size US8/UK6/4mm needles and St.St.
Work 14 (17, 19, 22, 24) rounds.

Crown: Follow the chart below for decrease rounds

6: Work 1 round  

Cut yarn, thread through remaining stitches, fasten off and weave in end.

Earflaps: Transfer stitches to needles as you remove the provisional cast on.  With right side facing join yarn, use the chart below and loosely bind off the ½ Back stitches. Work the Earflap.
With right side facing rejoin yarn, use the chart below and loosely bind off the Front stitches.
Work the Earflap.
With right side facing rejoin yarn, use the chart below and loosely bind off the remaining ½ Back stitches.
Fasten off and weave in end.

[Tip: A chain effect edge can be achieved if the first stitch is Slipped as if to Purl (S1p/w), Work to last stitch, Knit 1 through the back loop (K1tbl)].

Earflaps: Finished length will be approximately [1⅔ (1⅔, 2, 2⅓, 2⅔)”].

First Earflap:  * Work 4 Rows in the same stitch used for Brim across the [8 (8, 9, 9, 10)sts]. 
Dec Row (RS): S1p/w, K2tog tbl, work to last 3sts, K2tog, K1tbl.
Next Row:  S1p/w,work to last stitch, K1tbl.
Repeat the last 2 rows until 3 stitches remain, 6 (6, 8, 10, 12)rows.
Make an Icord with the remaining 3sts for at least 10 (10, 10, 10, 12)”.
Cut yarn, thread through remaining stitches, fasten off and weave in end.

Second Earflap: Repeat First Earflap from * on next set of Earflap stitches.

Fold Back Cuff Version: Work Brim, Body & Crown to Earflaps then continue as follows:-
Transfer cast on stitches to needles as you remove the provisional cast on. With right side facing join yarn, use the chart below and the same stitch used for Brim to work across the ½ Back stitches, thread waste yarn through the Earflap stitches before working them, work across the Front stitches, thread waste yarn through the Earflap stitches before working them, work across the remaining ½ Back stitches.

Continue working on theses stitches for an additional 9 rounds, loosely bind off, Fasten off and weave in end.

Earflaps: * With right side facing rejoin yarn, pick up and knit Earflap stitches marked by waste yarn using the same stitch as used for Brim, use the chart above to determine how many stitches you should be working with.
Work 3 more rows. 
Dec Row (RS): S1p/w, K2tog tbl, work to last 3sts, K2tog, K1tbl.
Next Row:  S1p/w,work to last stitch, K1tbl.
Repeat the last 2 rows until 3 stitches remain, 6 (6, 8, 10, 12)rows.
Make an Icord with the remaining 3sts for at least 10 (10, 10, 10, 12)”.
Cut yarn, thread through remaining stitches, fasten off and weave in end. 

Second Earflap: Repeat First Earflap from * on next set of Earflap stitches marked by waste yarn.
